Regions of Origin of Oriental Rugs

The tradition of hand-knotted carpets comes from the Eastern world and has always been anchored there. Designs and patterns of the various carpets are usually based on the region or country of origin, even though these clear demarcations and distinctive features are becoming increasingly blurred with globalisation.

Like their design, hand-knotted carpets get their name either from their region or from their country of origin. Important countries for handmade carpets are Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, India, China and also the Caucasus. Turkey, Morocco or Egypt, for example, are also some of the major countries with own characteristics.

However, the most important and best known oriental carpets come from Persia, today's Iran. Many styles originate here and almost every carpet is named after its place of origin. Nowadays, famous Tabriz or Gabbeh carpets are also replicated by hand in India, of course in a less elaborate way. Today oriental rugs from the various regions are in demand again in the western world
