Additional Rug Types

Traditionally hand-knotted rugs are usually named and categorised according to their country or region of origin. As each region has developed and consolidated its own style over many centuries, this distinction is still relevant today. Over time, however, a few types of carpet have also experienced such strong demand that they are now produced by hand in various countries. Prominent examples are Ziegler rugs and Kelims. Although Ziegler carpets are not comparable to traditional Persian carpets on the same level, they originated in Persia before their production was relocated to different countries for cost and capacity reasons. Also Kelim rugs Today, kilim rugs come from the most diverse regions, but the design here often allows conclusions to be drawn about the country of origin.

Recent trends have also led to the emergence of new rug categories and types. Due to the now strongly networked producers and dealers, new types are also produced in several countries, depending on quality and cost requirements. Very well-known examples of these relatively new species in the history of handmade rugs are vintage and designer rugs. Vintage rugs are mostly old oriental rugs completely reworked to create an authentic and modern vintage look. Designer rugs go one step further and combine a modern design, mostly designed in the western world, with the traditional craftsmanship of the Middle East.
